Design is no longer just about aesthetics, it’s about solving problems, creating trust, and shaping how people experience technology.
For many Nigerians looking to transition into tech, UI/UX design is one of the most accessible and impactful paths. But with so much information online, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
Here’s a structured guide I’ve developed based on my personal journey and experience mentoring aspiring designers to help you navigate your first steps into UI/UX design with clarity and confidence.
1. Begin With Curiosity
Before learning how to make use of tools or tutorials, start by immersing yourself in what design truly is. Read articles, watch videos, and listen to podcasts that explore the principles of user experience, usability, accessibility, and human-centered design. Understand how digital products are shaped and not just how they look, but how they work. The more context you absorb, the better your foundation will be.
2. Understand the Real Scope of the Role
A common misconception is that designers just “make things look nice.” In reality, first, there are different roles in design, and they are all different. UI/UX as a role is far more strategic. UX designers research user behavior, map user journeys, test interfaces, and collaborate with developers and product teams. Take time to understand the actual responsibilities of designers in different environments from startups to agencies and enterprise teams.
3. Get Comfortable With Design Tools
Once you understand the landscape, it’s time to start exploring the tools of the trade. Familiarize yourself with software like Figma, Adobe XD, and tools for wireframing and prototyping. These tools are essential, but don’t let them intimidate you, they’re just instruments to express your ideas.
4. Structure Your Learning Path
There’s a lot to learn, and self-teaching can get overwhelming. That’s why I always recommend enrolling in a structured bootcamp, or mentorship program. Whether it’s a paid course on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or Google UX, or joining communities like HNG Internship, a guided experience helps build both your skills and confidence.
5. Learn From Those Ahead of You
Follow experienced designers on social media, read case studies, and study the portfolios of industry leaders. Seeing how others present their work, their thinking process, approach to problem-solving, and attention to detail, can be incredibly inspiring and educational.
6. Build, Document, and Share
Start working on your own design projects. Redesign an app you already use. Create user flows and wireframes for a local business or personal idea. What matters most is learning how to think like a designer then showing your process. Document your work with clarity and honesty, and present it in a simple portfolio, even if it’s just a Notion page or Google Drive folder to begin with.
7. Surround Yourself With Designers
The design journey can feel isolating if you try to go it alone. Join local and online design communities. Attend events. Reach out to other designers for advice or feedback. Platforms like Twitter, Design Twitter, and Slack groups for designers are great places to ask questions, find mentors, and grow faster.
You don’t need to be a visual artist or know how to code to become a UI/UX designer. What you need is a genuine desire to solve problems, a willingness to learn, and the courage to start where you are. Many of us in the industry began with nothing but curiosity and a borrowed laptop. What matters most is that you take the first step and then keep going.
