The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology (IST), Uche Nnaji, has described biotechnology as a tool that directly impacts Nigeria’s ability to produce and provide sufficient, safe and nutritious food for its growing population. He made the observation during a working visit to the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA).
Describing the importance of NABDA, the Minister said that the agency’s mission was crucial to driving food security in Nigeria.
“NABDA’s vision is a testament to our country’s ambition and a beacon of hope extending across several key domains, including agriculture, healthcare, industrial processes, environmental sustainability, and overall economic growth. NABDA is an indispensable driver of innovation, economic development and sustainability in Nigeria, leveraging the power of biotechnology to address critical national challenges, from agricultural productivity to healthcare while opening doors to new industries and global competitiveness,” Nnaji explained.
Narrating the importance of the biotech insect resistant cotton, Nnaji further said that the strides made in Bt cotton commercialisation can reshape the country’s cotton industry, ensuring higher yields, enhanced quality and cost-effective pest management.
Speaking about Nigeria’s biotech PBR Cowpea, he said “the Maruca-resistant Bt Cowpea exemplifies innovation. Historically plagued by pests, this new variety heralds a monumental 20 per cent yield hike per hectare, equivalent to a staggering annual economic boon of N48 billion. Beyond the impressive figures, it embodies our commitment to uplifting our farming community and fortifying national food security.”
In his conclusion, the IST minister said “the feats achieved in TELA Maize, Bt. Cotton and Cowpea are more than scientific milestones; they echo Nigeria’s resilience, determination and progressive spirit. They are in tandem with Mr. President’s Emergency on Food Security declaration. With the discoveries, Nigeria is now among the League of Nations using science and technology to solve its challenges, especially in agriculture.”
