Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), has commenced the monthly distribution of food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across Benue State for the year 2026.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Humanistry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and Executive Secretary SEMA, Sir James Iorpuu, who spoke to newsmen in his office in Makurdi, said Governor Alia is committed to alleviating the plight of people displaced by insecurity and other emergencies across Benue State.
He said the distribution of food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) is done across various Local Government Areas of the state.
Ioepuu said the intervention is not merely about distributing relief materials but restoring hope, reaffirming dignity, and demonstrating that government remains responsive to the needs of its people, especially the most vulnerable.
He said under the Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Benue State Government has continued to prioritise humanitarian response, safe return, and sustainable resettlement of displaced persons.
The items distributed include essential food commodities to address immediate nutritional needs, as well as non-food items aimed at improving living conditions in the camps and host communities.
While noting that relief materials do not replace lost homes and livelihoods, He said they provide critical support and temporary stability as we work toward durable solutions.
Iorpuu assured that while the distribution process is guided by
transparency, accountability, and fairness, he noted that all beneficiary data has been carefully verified to ensure that assistance reaches those genuinely affected.
He appreciated the humanitarian partners, security agencies, community leaders, camp officials, and dedicated staff of Benue SEMA who have worked tirelessly to make this exercise possible.
“To our displaced brothers and sisters, I want you to know that you are not forgotten. Government remains committed to supporting you not only with relief interventions but also with long-term recovery initiatives, including livelihood support, farming initiatives, and coordinated plans for Safe return to your ancestral homes.”
Items distributed include bags of rice, beans, garri, bags sugar, salt, gallons of red oil, groundnut oil, mats among other items.
