In the ever-evolving landscape of Afro-Fusion, new voices continue to emerge with stories that reflect resilience, identity and creative ambition. One such voice is Abimbola Olamide Obafemi-Samuel, professionally known as Be’Mi, a Nigerian singer and songwriter steadily carving out her place in the music scene with a blend of soulful melodies, poetic storytelling and confident lyricism.

Be’Mi’s journey into music began long before the recording studio. At just 11 years old, she was already discovering her creative instincts during lunch breaks at school, where freestyle rap sessions and playful beatboxing with friends became a daily ritual. What started as childhood fun soon revealed a deeper connection to rhythm and expression.

Alongside her growing interest in music, Be’Mi developed a strong passion for writing. During her secondary school years, English Language and Literature became her favourite subjects, offering her a platform to explore poetry, storytelling and creative expression. Writing became more than an academic exercise; it became a personal outlet where thoughts and emotions could be translated into words.

Her academic path would later take her into the world of politics and global affairs. Be’Mi earned a degree in Politics and International Relations before going on to complete a Master’s degree in Global Politics and Economics. Yet even while immersed in academia, her creative instincts never faded. The pen she once used for essays and poetry gradually became a tool for songwriting.

A defining turning point came during her fourth year at university when she decided to audition for Big Brother Naija, Nigeria’s popular reality television show. Inspired by a segment encouraging contestants to showcase their talents, Be’Mi wrote her first full song, titled “Surulere,” hoping to perform it during the audition. Although she was not selected for the show, the experience unexpectedly became the catalyst for her musical journey.

Rather than discouraging her, the rejection pushed Be’Mi to take her music more seriously. She began writing songs independently and reconnecting with the freestyle creativity that first introduced her to music as a child. Determined to deepen the authenticity of her sound, she also learned to speak and write Yoruba, allowing her to incorporate her cultural roots into her music.

Three years later, an unexpected full-circle moment arrived when her music was played inside the Big Brother Naija 2023 house. For Be’Mi, the moment served as quiet validation that the rejection she once faced had only redirected her path toward something greater.

Musically, Be’Mi draws inspiration from internationally recognised artists such as Rihanna, Tiwa Savage and Nicki Minaj, performers whose bold artistry and global influence helped shape her own ambitions. Like her influences, Be’Mi aims to create music that is both emotionally resonant and culturally impactful.

Describing herself as “The Queen of the Night,” Be’Mi brings a confident and vibrant energy to her artistic identity. Her music blends Afrobeats, Afro-Fusion rhythms with introspective storytelling, offering listeners a sound that reflects both vulnerability and strength.

Outside the studio, Be’Mi continues to nurture the passions that first shaped her creativity. Writing, fashion and travel remain central influences in her artistic life, inspiring the themes and perspectives woven throughout her music.

As Afro-Fusion continues to expand its global footprint, emerging voices like Be’Mi whose social handle is @bemi4eva are helping define the next chapter of the genre. With a story rooted in persistence, creativity and cultural identity, the singer is gradually building a presence that signals promising possibilities for the future.
