Beauty with Purpose: How Social Impact is Reshaping the Future of the Hair Industry – Omolola Akinboade

For a long time, beauty was seen as something external, a reflection, a product, a look. But in recent years, the meaning of beauty has evolved. It’s no longer just about appearance; it’s about impact. It’s about what your work does for others, not just what it earns for you. And that shift is exactly where the future of the hair industry lies.

When I started LolaExpress Hair, I wanted to make women look beautiful. But over time, I realized that the real power of beauty is in how it makes people feel, not just the clients who buy from us, but also the women who learn from us. That’s why I founded LEH Empowerment. I wanted to create something that reached beyond business, something that gave back, trained others, and changed stories.

Through our empowerment programs, I’ve seen what happens when beauty becomes a bridge. Women who once doubted themselves have found purpose and income through skill. Some came to class quiet, unsure, and afraid. A few days later, they left with their heads high, carrying not just a certificate, but a new sense of confidence. That transformation is what beauty should be about.

The hair industry is one of the few spaces where creativity and community meet perfectly. Every wig, every style, every class tells a story of expression and empowerment. But for too long, it’s been treated as just a business, something transactional. What I’ve learned is that when you put purpose behind your brand, it starts to live beyond you. People stop buying what you sell and start believing in what you stand for.

Social impact doesn’t always require a big foundation or a large budget. It starts with awareness, a simple decision to use your platform to do good. For me, that meant using the same tools I used to grow my business, social media, storytelling, and teaching, to also uplift others. Every video, every caption, every training session carries a piece of that mission: to remind women that their creativity has value.

I believe the next generation of beauty entrepreneurs will be defined not just by how innovative they are, but by how impactful they choose to be. The world is changing fast, and customers are more conscious than ever. They want to buy from brands that care, brands that give back, teach, and represent something bigger than profit.

That’s why beauty businesses today must learn to build beyond sales. Yes, we need to create excellent products, but we must also create opportunities. The industry can no longer afford to exist in isolation. Every successful stylist or entrepreneur should be asking, “Who am I helping rise with me?”

One of the most rewarding things for me is seeing my former students create their own training programs, employ others, and become leaders in their own right. That’s when I know we’re doing something right. Because impact that ends with you isn’t impact, it’s ego. True impact multiplies.

I often say that beauty, at its core, is service. Whether you’re styling a client, teaching a class, or mentoring someone, you’re giving confidence. You’re restoring something inside them. And that’s why beauty work should always carry purpose. When you help people feel seen, you’re not just building a business, you’re building dignity.

The future of the hair industry belongs to those who understand that purpose and profit can exist together. You don’t have to choose between doing well and doing good. When you work with excellence and empathy, success follows naturally.

At LolaExpress Hair, we’re still growing, still evolving, but one thing remains constant, we lead with heart. Every strand, every product, every class is a piece of that larger vision: to use beauty as a force for empowerment.

Because when you do business with purpose, you don’t just change your life,  you change others too. And that’s the kind of beauty that never fades.
