Beautiful Camp: Fostering equality and democratic values in Nigeria

By Damiete Braide

With the support of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Czech Aid, Jos Repertory Theatre (JRT) is set to launch a transformative project called Beautiful Camp in the cities of Jos and Abuja. This initiative aims to promote equality and non-discrimination, focusing on equal political and public participation among youths from Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

By combining virtual and physical elements, the camp will commence with a series of seminars and interactive sessions. These will set the stage for a four-day physical camp in Abuja, where participants and a core group of facilitators will engage in idea-sharing and collaborative activities in a mutually respectful environment.

Beautiful Camp leverages the arts to localise the transition promotion policy of the Czech Republic. This policy emphasises the importance of democratic culture, respect for human rights, the rule of law, and overall societal well-being. By incorporating these principles, the project aims to ensure full participation in public affairs, fostering a global dialogue and enhancing the enjoyment of human rights.

At its core, Beautiful Camp is founded on the belief that freedoms of thought and expression are essential to human dignity. This dignity forms the bedrock of democracy, the rule of law, and public participation, leading to the full realisation of human potential. The camp, said the organisers, would focus on sharing ideas and experiences related to freedom of expression and thought, conscience and religion, education, and the broader transition promotion policy. Through active citizenship games and scenarios, participants will develop their ability to critically evaluate information, form their own views, and recognise the significance of their voices.

JRT is working closely with the local Czech Embassy in Abuja to bring the ideals of Beautiful Camp to fruition. The project’s objectives include fostering the common good across various divides and offering hope in challenging times. By promoting dialogue and mutual respect, the camp aims to build bridges and create a supportive environment where young people can articulate their voices and mobilise together.

Beautiful Camp is supported by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Czech Aid under its Transition programme. This collaboration underscores the commitment of both the Czech Republic and JRT to promoting democratic values and human rights in Nigeria. By empowering youths and encouraging active citizenship, Beautiful Camp aspires to make a lasting impact on Nigerian society, demonstrating the power of unity and shared purpose in overcoming obstacles and fostering positive change.
