• Powers Ibadan factory with solar in major climate push
By Bianca Iboma-Emefu
BAT Nigeria has announced significant strides in decarbonising its operations, marking one of the most comprehensive energy transitions by a major manufacturer in the country.
The company made this disclosure as part of activities to celebrate the World Environment Day 2026 under the theme of Climate Action.
In a landmark move, the company successfully shifted 100 percent of its manufacturing operations from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG), completely eliminating diesel use. This shift has substantially cut the carbon intensity of its operations while improving energy efficiency and supply reliability.
The energy overhaul is reinforced by the installation of a 1.4-megawatt solar power system at its advanced Ibadan factory, one of the largest and most modern manufacturing sites in the region. These initiatives form the core of BAT Nigeria’s broader strategy to align industrial growth with environmental sustainability.

“We are transforming the way we operate by embedding sustainability into every aspect of our business,” said Hasnain Ishtaq, Operations Director, BAT Nigeria. “From investing in solar energy to advancing circularity and water stewardship, we are demonstrating that industrial growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”
Beyond energy, BAT Nigeria has set notable benchmarks in resource management. Since 2024, the company has achieved a 98.64 percent waste recycling rate, while its Ibadan factory has operated as a zero-waste-to-landfill facility since 2021. In water stewardship, the company secured certification under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard in 2022 and has already reduced freshwater withdrawal by approximately 42 percent, beating its 2030 global target of 35 percent reduction.
These results are supported by digital tools, including a Global Manufacturing System, an Enterprise Data Platform, a Utility Monitoring System, and Smart Boiler technology, which enable real-time optimisation of energy and resource use.
The announcements come as Nigeria and other nations intensify efforts to meet climate commitments. BAT Nigeria’s actions illustrate how large manufacturers can drive tangible emission reductions and resource efficiency while maintaining competitiveness and contributing to national economic development.
The company said its efforts reflect a long-term commitment to its purpose of “Building A Better Tomorrow,” balancing economic progress with environmental care in line with global climate goals.
