Gunmen suspected to be bandits, in large numbers, on Sunday, invaded a local market in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, killed no fewer than seven people and left many others injured.
The incident, according to some residents of the community, occurred on Sunday Market in Kampani Zurak Wase LGA, when residents of the community were busy with market activities in the area.
Abdullahi Hussaini, a youth leader in the area, in an interview, said the gunmen arrived at the market around 2pm, and suddenly opened fire at people transacting businesses, on Sunday.
He said: “The gunmen arrived at the market in their numbers on motorcycles. They started shooting sporadically, killing seven people instantly, while many others got injured. The gunmen successfully launched the attack and fled without any resistance because people were not expecting any security threat at the moment,” he emotionally stated.
Hussaini added: “The gunmen fled to the bush, but police personnel have since been deployed to the community to restore law and order. We are calling for more security deployment in the area because we don’t know what may happen anytime soon,” he expressed concern.
The Spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, when contacted on the unfortunate development, declined responding to the inquiries.
Wase LGA has, over the years, continued to suffer from ravaging operations of banditry and kidnapping, but recorded relative peace for almost a year, until the recent attacks.
