Banditry: 7m people displaced, need relief support in Northeast – FG

The Federal Government has said that 7.1 million people in the North East region were in need of relief support, a situation caused by banditry.

Government through the Minister Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster management and Social development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, further disclosed that 1.8 million people were internally displaced.

Umar Farouq, who stated this during the maiden edition of the 2022 management retreat, yesterday in Abuja, said climate change contributes to the humanitarian situation, worsening flood and drought that depletes arable land resources in the country.

She said the National Policy on Internally Displaced People (IDP) guides stakeholders on managing the affairs of the individuals hence, the National Social Investment programme was designed to tackle the issues of poverty and unemployment.

According to her, the retreat was organised to enable stakeholders brainstorm on how to improve the actualisation of the mandate of the ministry.

On his part, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, ANasiru Gwarzo said within the three years of the ministry’s existence, it has come up with policies which serve as instrument that guide the implementation of the various programmes and projects of the ministry.

Gwarzo called on the participants to ‘tell yourself the truth’s while they brainstorm because there was the need for improvement in the sector.
