Hunters and operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) have neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin, Kachalla Sani Yellow, during a gun battle in Anka Local Government, Zamfara State.
The bandit commander was reportedly killed after the hunters and CJTF repelled an attack launched by bandits in the area.
Yellow was regarded as one of the most influential bandit leaders terrorising communities in Anka, Bukkuyum and Maru LGs, Zamfara State. Security sources said he was among the commanders responsible for coordinating several deadly attacks on communities across the North-West.
Confirming the development, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the notorious bandit leader was killed during the encounter.
Following the incident, images of the slain kingpin’s mutilated body circulated widely on social media.
Meanwhile, thousands of students and youth organisations in Borno State have called for greater national support for the Nigerian military and other security agencies in the fight against Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), bandits and other criminal groups.
The call was made on Sunday during a solidarity rally held in Maiduguri to mobilise public support for security agencies battling insurgency and other violent crimes across the country.
Leader of the protesters and former official of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Suleiman Muhammad, urged Nigerians to embrace national unity as the country’s strongest weapon against violent extremism.
“Terrorists have killed our people, destroyed our communities and stolen our peace. This fight is not for government alone; it is the responsibility of every Nigerian,” he said.
Muhammad also urged Nigerians to reject the payment of ransom to kidnappers, bandits and terrorist groups.
“When we deny them financial support, we weaken their operations,” he said.
He further appealed to parents to instil the values of peace in their children, while urging communities to report suspicious activities and encouraging leaders to speak with one voice against insecurity.
Other student bodies, including those from Mohammed Lawan College of Agriculture, Maiduguri, also called for sustained government investment in communities liberated from insurgents to prevent a resurgence of violence.
The rally, held at the Post Office area, Maiduguri city centre, attracted scores of students from tertiary institutions across Borno State, alongside youth groups.
The protesters displayed placards with inscriptions such as “United Against Terrorism,” “Support Our Troops,” “Enough is Enough,” “Peace is Our Right,” and “Nigeria Must Win.”
