Team Nigeria athletes have opened up on the determination, unity and belief that powered their remarkable turnaround at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, where a youthful and largely home-based squad silenced critics to secure multiple qualification tickets for global competitions.
Coming into the championship under scrutiny following an unconvincing opening day, the Nigerian team responded with resilience, producing a series of strong performances that earned them an automatic place at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship slated for September.
In addition, Nigeria secured qualification for the World Athletics Championships in the 4×100m men’s relay, 4×100m women’s relay, and 4×400m mixed relay—an outcome that underlined the depth of emerging talent within the country’s athletics system.
Speaking after the competition, Maria Thompson, one of the standout performers, summed up the team’s mindset with a statement that has come to define their campaign.
“Despite the fact that more of the team are home-based and some are not fully prepared, we gave our best for the country,” Thompson said.
Her remarks captured the spirit of a squad largely made up of athletes competing within Nigeria, many of whom stepped onto the global stage with limited exposure but immense determination. After facing criticism from analysts and stakeholders, the team regrouped, drawing strength from adversity.
“We told ourselves after the first day that it was not too impressive. Mistakes are part of sports, so we pushed forward and made the country and ourselves proud,” she added.
That internal resolve proved decisive. The Nigerian athletes returned to the track with renewed focus, executing their races with improved coordination, sharper baton exchanges, and greater confidence—qualities that ultimately turned early doubts into widespread admiration.
For Chidera Ezeakor, the championship was not just about results but also about faith, teamwork, and growth.
“We give all the glory to God. He was truly with us, and I want to thank the coaches for believing in us and pushing us beyond our limits,” Ezeakor said.
Ezeakor emphasized that beyond qualification, the experience gained in Gaborone represents a crucial step in the development of the team.
