From Mohammed Abubakar, Dutse
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Jigawa State-owned Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa branch (ASUU-SLUK), has shelved its proposed “total and comprehensive” strike, which was scheduled to commence on 3 November.
The latest development follows the resolution of the lecturers’ series of demands by the state government negotiating team, headed by the State Head of Service, Muhammad Kandira Dagaceri, which was said to have met with the union’s leadership in Dutse, the state capital, on Wednesday.
The branch chairman of the union, Dr Idris Muhammad Chiromawa, confirmed in a chat with Daily Sun in Dutse on Thursday that the state government had finally approved the implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement at the institution with effect from October 2026, with arrears covering the period from January to September 2026 (nine months).
He added that the state government had also resolved other outstanding issues, such as the earned academic allowance (EAA), though he did not elaborate on the terms of settlement.
The union had, in a unanimous resolution on Tuesday, 2 September, handed the state government a 15 September ultimatum to meet its demands, failing which its members would embark on a two-week warning strike. The ultimatum was further extended to 30 October following the intervention of the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Yusuf Chamo.
The union leader expressed appreciation to the state government and the university management for approving the agreement.
“We also extend our gratitude to our esteemed members for their patience, understanding and continued support throughout this struggle.”
