The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Sule Lamido University Kafin Hausa (ASUU-SLUK) in Jigawa State has given a new deadline of October 31 to the state government to resolve all its outstanding demands on the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement.
The union, however, maintained that failure of the state government to meet the new deadline would force it to embark on a total and comprehensive strike beginning from November 3, 2026.
The union’s position was contained in a resolution arrived at after a special meeting on the update on the outcome of the engagement with the state government team regarding the outstanding issues affecting the university.
Jointly signed by the chairman, Comrade Idris Muhammad Chiromawa, and the Secretary, Salisu Yunusa, and made available to Daily Sun yesterday, the union, however, acknowledged and appreciated the efforts made by the state government team towards resolving the outstanding issues.
The union had, at its congress on September 2, given the state government until Tuesday, September 15, (yesterday) to resolve the issues. The state government on Wednesday convened a stakeholders’ meeting with a view to addressing the demands of the lecturers.
On the IPPIS inefficiency, the congress noted the directive given by the government to the Payroll Office, alongside SLUK Bursary, to restructure the software and capture the peculiarities of the university.
On the removal of 0.7 per cent for the 2 per cent local government contributions to SLUK, the congress noted the assurance of the state government that the additional funding would be provided to the university should additional funding become necessary.
“The congress agreed to allow the state government until the end of October, 2026, as requested by the state government to fully implement the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement, including the payment of all outstanding arrears starting from January 2026 to date.
“Should the state government refuse to address the contending issues, the congress resolved to embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike effective from November 3, 2026.”
