The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the national Women’s Rugby Football League team, the Green Falcons, after their impressive victories against the Ghana Leopardess at Alaro City in Lekki, Lagos.

Olopade stated, “I congratulate the Rugby League family in Nigeria on the significant success achieved today. These victories highlight the potential for our nation to benefit from this wonderful sport, while also empowering both our boys and girls, alongside our men and women. Celebrating these wins on the International Day of the Girl Child makes it even more special.”

Abiodun Cole, Chairman of the Nigeria Rugby Football League Association, conveyed his confidence in the team’s readiness ahead of the upcoming World Series in Canada. “We have a dedicated support system here in Alaro City, alongside valuable backing from former players at home and abroad.

“Our strategy includes a blend of local players and those based overseas, which is essential for creating a strong squad. With trust in their abilities and the guidance of God, the team is eager to deliver an impressive performance in Canada.”

The Green Falcons showcased their skills by completing a double victory over Ghana’s Leopardess, winning 24-8 in the second leg after a tough match that saw a 40-0 defeat in the first game on Tuesday.

This friendly series provided the Green Falcons a vital opportunity to refine their tactics in preparation for a more substantial challenge: their participation in the inaugural Rugby League World Series in Canada later this month.

Nigeria is set to face Ireland, Fiji, and the host country Canada for the coveted final qualification spot for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, slated to take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
