Super Eagles forward Tolu Arokodare has opened up about his relationship with Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez after scoring the winning goal in the club’s 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar on Saturday.

The Nigerian striker headed home in the ninth minute following a cross from Abdellah Ouazane to secure all three points for Ajax in their Eredivisie encounter at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Arokodare’s goal came days after reports emerged that Míchel was unhappy with aspects of his performance, particularly his pressing and movement during Ajax’s 2-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.

The criticism prompted questions about his relationship with the Spanish coach during an interview with ESPN after the AZ match.

Responding to the reports, the 25-year-old explained that their relationship was positive despite the manager’s passionate approach to football.

“Believe me when I say that you will never understand what kind of relationship I have with the coach. And not just me, but almost every player,” he said, as quoted by Voetbal International.

“The bond is very dynamic, not in a negative way. You really wouldn’t believe what we all do during the meetings, in terms of match footage and things like that.”

The former Genk forward further described the coach’s personality, explaining that Míchel’s demanding approach was motivated by his desire to help the players improve.

“He is a very passionate and emotional man who doesn’t like losing. Not even when he joins in a rondo. But he does it all out of love; he really doesn’t want to hurt you. I am completely open to learning. That is the mentality needed to grow.”

Arokodare also praised the manager’s lighter side, revealing that he brings humour and enjoyment to the team’s meetings despite his serious approach on the touchline.

“He can also be very funny during meetings; everyone is in stitches. You only see the serious Míchel, but he is genuinely funny. He is very serious and passionate, but can also suddenly become very lighthearted. He brings joy to this group, which is very important. His English has also improved a lot.”

The Nigerian striker has enjoyed an impressive start to life in Amsterdam since joining Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2026.

His goal against AZ took his tally to 10 goals in 15 appearances for Ajax in all competitions, while he has also registered three assists.
