The 6 Battalion Brigade of Nigeria Army in partnership with philanthropic organization has concluded a 5 day vocational and Entrepreneurial training of 100 women at Army Barracks , Ibagwa Akwa Ibom state.
The skills include Ankara craft, catering, soap making and hair dressing .
The programme was supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO).
Speaking at the presentation of start up kits to the trainees at the barrack, Commander of the battalion Lt Col E Y Gyang said the gesture of the oil firm was a good initiative .
“This is really a good initiative by VCare Development foundation. We never thought it would come to pass as many organizations make promises without meeting up.
“This will give our women the opportunity to learn skills, earn income, and support their families.”
It was gathered that the training was in response to the need to provide necessary skills to wives of service men living in the barracks as a means to give them sources on income to cater for families widows in the absence of their husbands.
“The welfare of families is closely tied to the stability of household income. Dependants of servicemen and widows need practical skills and pathways to economic inclusion”
According to the Barracks Commander, the programme was jointly sponsored by Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF) to the equip the women and supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited to change the status of Barracks women and reduce their dependency .
Gyang explained that participants were introduced to practical approaches for planning, management and the art of growing small businesses.
“The blend of vocational and business training sessions addressed a common gap where skills exist without business structure for sustainable livelihood”.

He said each participant received a business start-up kit for selected trade.
” This provision removes a major barrier faced by many trainees who complete programmes but lack the tools to begin
” Participants will receive 6 months of Business Development Services, including mentorship and technical guidance aimed at helping them navigate early-stage business challenges
“The programme is hereby concluded with presentation of business start-up kits and the commissioning of new equipment at the Army 6 Battalion Skills Acquisition Centre.
” This will enable the centre to train more participants in the future”.
He commended VCDF for organizing the programme with commissioning of 5 industrial sewing and 2 industrial weaving machines.
One of the participants Fatima Aminu said women in the barracks never expected such gesture and appreciated the organizers for the assistance.

“We did not expect the volume of these starter packs. Some of us had skills but could not start because we lacked funds for equipment. Now we can begin and grow our businesses with the training and support provided.”
The Commander said children of military households were also supported through the “ASPIRE” scholarships.
He said the “ASPIRE” scholarships has provided financial assistance to 66 students as their contribution to improved access to education and reduce financial burden on families in the barracks.
