The Nigerian Army has explained the explosion within the confines of its Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, April 1. saying the incident reportedly occurred on a farmland adjacent to the Mammy Market within the Cantonment premises.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesman of the Nigerian Army, released a statement addressing the incident. According to the statement, the explosion is suspected to have been triggered by the burning of refuse and other inflammable debris by a farmer who was cultivating the farmland. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded as a result of the explosion.
The statement also acknowledges the potential concerns among the general public, given the historical antecedents of explosions within the Cantonment. However, it reassures the public that the situation is currently under control. The Nigerian Army Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has promptly cordoned off the area of the farmland to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.
Moreover, it’s noted that the Cantonment was recently cleared and certified free of unexploded ordnances. Despite this, the Army urges residents in the general area not to panic and assures them of their safety.
The statement underscores the Army’s commitment to maintaining the safety and security of both military personnel and civilians within the vicinity. Measures are being taken to ascertain the cause of the explosion and to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
As investigations continue, residents are advised to remain vigilant and cooperative with the authorities. The Nigerian Army assures the public that updates will be provided as soon as new information becomes available.
