Argentine President Javier Milei has launched a strong attack on the United Nations, accusing the organisation of failing in its responsibility to promote global security and protect human rights.
Milei made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Argentine leader criticised the UN’s approach to international affairs, arguing that the organisation had failed to respond effectively to conflicts, terrorism and other global challenges.
“Those who were supposed to guarantee collective security and human rights failed in their task. They allowed chaos, violence and international terrorism to flourish,” Milei said.
He went further in his criticism, describing the UN as ineffective and attacking what he characterised as excessive bureaucracy within the organisation.
“The UN has become a useless organisation, serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats,” he said.
Milei also accused the UN of failing to enforce its own resolutions, particularly in relation to Argentina’s longstanding sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.
He said the organisation had “looked the other way” while Argentina’s dispute with Britain over the islands remained unresolved.
“For us, the Malvinas are a national cause,” Milei said, arguing that the dispute also raised questions about the UN’s ability to enforce its resolutions.

Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the Falklands, which have been administered by Britain since 1833. The two countries fought a 10-week war over the islands in 1982 after Argentine forces invaded, with Britain retaining control after the conflict.
Milei argued that the international system fails to impose consequences on countries or actors that disregard its rules.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” he said.
The President also criticised what he sees as the UN’s involvement in issues beyond its core mandate, including global health policies, immigration, environmental policies and artificial intelligence.
Milei’s speech also highlighted Argentina’s close relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Argentina and the US announced the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, a joint initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and connecting key economic sectors in Argentina with Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The initiative is expected to focus on transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including the Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon formation in southern Argentina.
Milei has increasingly aligned Argentina’s foreign policy with Washington and has used his appearances at the UN to challenge multilateral institutions and advocate what he describes as a more limited role for international organisations.
