…Intensifies consultations for Adamu, others’ replacement
From Romanus Ugwu, Abuja
Barring any last minute change of plans, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is to organise a mini convention next month (August) to elect replacements for National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, Secretary, Iyiola Omisore who resigned recently and other national officers.
While Adamu and Omisore left the party in dramatic circumstances after battling for over a year to retain their positions, other national officers to be replaced either died or secured other appointments.
A member of the NWC told Daily Sun that the likelihood of the acting National Chairman, Abubakar Kyari, making the ministerial list has necessitated the organisation of the elective mini-convention within one month to fill the vacant positions.
Our source further revealed that though they were working round the clock to unfreeze the party’s accounts, the national leadership felt the organisation of the mini convention to fill the vacant positions would facilitate the unfreezing of the accounts.
“We have already started preparing for the mini-convention and I can assure you that it will not be too long. We are looking at the possibility of holding it within one month, tentatively next week August if there is no reason to change the plans we are already making.
“We have to organise the mini convention as soon as possible because there is every likelihood that our acting chairman may cross over to the executive side. There shall be no vacuum that will make the party suffer. But even if the acting chairman didn’t eventually cross over as anticipated, he cannot continue on acting capacity for too long. We don’t want to be like the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Committee that lasted from six months to years,” the source said.
Defending the possibility of holding the convention soon, our source said: “You also know that our accounts have been frozen due to the leadership crisis we had and the resignation of two of the signatories. Yes, we are making arrangements to unfreeze the accounts, but we also know that having a substantive national leadership through the elective mini-convention will fast track the process.”
On persons pencilled down for the position of national chairman, secretary and the zoning arrangements to fill the vacancies, our source said: “I can’t give you any name for the likely replacement for our former chairman and secretary but all I can tell you is that consultation is still ongoing. We are still meeting and networking with relevant stakeholders ahead of the proposed convention.”
Meanwhile, fear has gripped directors and personal staff hired by the erstwhile national chairman over the security of their jobs after the resignation of the immediate past boss of the party.
Surprisingly, while some of the directors have embarked on few weeks leave to enable them understudy and monitor the situation, some others have already started evacuating their personal belongings to avoid any embarrassing situation.
