An All Progressives Congress (APC) member, Taofeek Mustapha, was reportedly shot by suspected political thugs yesterday, causing panic in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
At Oluode-Aranyin, Osogbo, where the incident happened, a resident, Sola Hammed, said the hoodlums arrived in an unmarked vehicle and began shooting sporadically into the air.
Hammed said people ran for safety to avoid stray bullets, but they later heard someone crying for help. He reported that the victim was shot in the leg while running for his life.
The victim said he was wearing an AMBO-crested cap, linked to the APC governorship candidate branding at the time of the shooting.
He claimed that the attackers pursued him because he was wearing the cap, shot him and then retreated back into their vehicle and drove away.
He alleged that the attackers used Accord Party insignia, with three of them coming out with guns before shooting again.
The Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, saying investigation has started.
Separately, the police spokesperson also said that two residents in Ilesa who were kidnapped by suspected political thugs have been rescued.
The victims were reportedly abducted by thugs alleged to be loyal to the APC.
Political atmosphere has been tense ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state as the two major political parties – APC and Accord – daily engaged in accusations and counter accusations.
