Fresh concerns have emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the release of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general election.
Some party stakeholders have questioned the composition of the council, particularly the absence of several experienced political strategists, campaigners and government officials who played prominent roles in the party’s 2023 presidential campaign and in defending the administration since its inauguration.
The concerns centre on whether the proposed structure adequately reflects the party’s political organisation, institutional hierarchy and the various groups that contributed to its electoral success in 2023.
Despite the concerns, stakeholders have welcomed the appointment of a former state governor and experienced grassroots politician as Director-General of the campaign council.
Party insiders described the appointment as a positive development, citing the appointee’s extensive political networks, grassroots experience and knowledge of the party’s internal dynamics.
However, some stakeholders expressed concern over the absence of several senior government officials, former campaign leaders and prominent party communicators from the proposed structure.
According to party sources, the affected individuals have played important roles in the 2023 presidential campaign, government communication and efforts to counter opposition criticism.
One stakeholder said the campaign could benefit from the inclusion of experienced communicators who have demonstrated familiarity with political messaging, media engagement and public advocacy.
“There is a need to make adequate use of the experience available within the party. A broad and inclusive structure will give different stakeholders a greater sense of participation,” the source said.
There were also questions about the allocation of responsibilities, with concerns that assigning multiple directorates to some individuals could place excessive demands on them and affect the efficiency of the campaign structure.
One stakeholder argued that responsibilities should be distributed among qualified party members to ensure that each area receives sufficient attention.
Another concern relates to the representation of the various political blocs within the party. Some insiders believe that the final structure should accommodate the interests of the major groups that contributed to the APC’s victory in 2023.
They stressed that inclusiveness would be important in maintaining cohesion as the party prepares for the 2027 election.
Despite the concerns, party stakeholders welcomed reports that the campaign council list is being reviewed.
They described the review as an opportunity to address reservations, broaden representation and produce a structure that enjoys wider acceptance across the party.
According to one source, the priority should be to establish a campaign team based on competence, experience, loyalty, regional balance and inclusiveness.
The stakeholders maintained that the APC would be better positioned for the 2027 election if its campaign structure reflected the collective strength of the party rather than the interests of any particular group.
They urged party leaders to sustain consultation and dialogue while finalising the council, saying a united and broadly representative campaign structure would be essential to an effective national campaign.
