Anxiety in Kano over influx of strange commercial bike, tricycle operators

KANO

From Desmond Mgboh, Kano

Anxiety has gripped the metropolitan area of Kano State, following the influx of unfamiliar commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators into the state.

An intelligence brief by a security analyst, Abubakar Abdullahi, on November 30, indicated that there was a noticeable increase in unfamiliar commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators within the metropolis.

The brief recommended the deployment of plain-cloth operatives across strategic transport hubs and the registration and profiling of all tricycle and motorcycle operators in the state.

The state government had, years ago, banned the operation of commercial motorcycles, but the mode of commercial transportation had resurfaced in the last few months.

In its response to recent public concern on the subject, the Kano State government said it was committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all Kano citizens.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim  Waiya, yesterday, said appropriate measures were being deployed to contain security challenges across the 44 LGAs of the state.

“The State Government wishes to inform the public that our competent security agencies are on top of the situation” the statement explained in respect to the fears of the alleged influx.

“While the state has provided all necessary support to the security agencies, it remains determined to provide any additional assistance required to ensure that they perform their mandate comfortably, professionally and effectively.”

While the government acknowledged the public recommendations on enhanced monitoring, including surveillance at all entry and exit points of the state, the Kano State Government assured citizens that the suggestions were currently being reviewed as part of a broader security assessment and response strategy.

The statement said that the administration would continue to work closely with local government leadership, traditional institutions, community leaders, security agencies and citizens’ groups to ensure that full-scale security, stability and peace were restored in the state.
