Kano State House of Assembly has resolved to recall the State Emirate Council Law 2019 and the Kano State Emirate Amendment Law 2023 for possible amendment.

The resolution to review the law
followed a motion of public interest initiated by the Majority leader of the House, Lawan Hissatni chediyar Yan Gurasa during Tuesday’s plenary

At the plenary on Tuesday, the Majority Leader sought the approval of the lawmakers to call back the old law for amendment.

On his part, a member of the House representing Dawakin Kudu Constituency Shu’aibu Rabi’u seconded the motion.

Thel law was first amended in 2019 amidst tension between the then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi.

The amendment led to the fragmentation of Kano Emirate iCouncil into five distinct emirates, namely Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, as well as the appointment of First Class Emirs for these newly established councils.

It also subtly paved the way for the deposition of Mohammed Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

Daily Sun recalls that with the victory of Abba Kabir Yusuf as the Governor of Kano State, there have been spirited efforts by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and some interests to restore the old Council Emirate Council Law.
