- applauds fathers as change agents
From Fred Ezeh, Abuja
Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has championed a campaign that might herald a societal reforms thus ending or reducing moral decadence in the society.
It lamented that family units are failing in its statutory responsibilities to guide affairs of the members, thus resulting in increasing breakdown of morals among younger generation.
Vicar, St James Anglican Cathedral Church, Asokoro, Abuja, Benjamin Idume, who spoke at an event organized by the church to celebrate the 2024 Father’s Day with theme “the roles of Christian fathers in homes”, applauded the roles of fathers as agents of change in the society.
He said the aim of the special celebration and recognition was to appreciate the fathers who are rarely recognized and appreciated despite their numerous sacrifices, contributions and self-denial of pleasures in a bid to provide for immediate and extended family members.
He said: “Fathers occupy very important position in the family. They are decision makers, at helm of affairs. A father is the Priest and shepherd of the family.”
He challenged the fathers never to relent amid several discouragements, but continue, through the Help of God, to offer their best to their families, reminding them that the family units are looking up to them for provision, guide and protection.
He commended the roles they have played in strengthening the family ties, praying to God to bless them richly with good health and vitality so they can continue to protect and provide for their families.
Emmanuel Ohakim, President of Christian Men Fellowship, St James Cathedral Church, in his remarks, also expressed worry over the moral decadence in the society, challenging the fathers to rise to their responsibilities, and not be distracted by financial pursuits and neglect their families particularly the children.
Ohakim renewed the call for fathers to spend enough time with their children particularly in morning devotion, and also have discussions with them after the day’s activities to know them more.
Chairman of Father’s Day organising committee, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, in his remarks, said the father’s day was an opportunity for reflection for all fathers especially political leaders to follow the right path in leading the people and providing the good governance for the people.
Chukwunyere said: “We know our leaders are not doing what exactly they are suppose to do but we must not relent in praying for them in line with what the Bible advocated.
“If we have a leader who never plans to be a leader or working on the script of his godfathers, it will be difficult for them to satisfy the yearnings of the people but rather prefer to serve their Godfathers. For this reason, Nigerians should choose wisely in the next general elections in 2027.”
