The Chief Executive Officer, Sustainable Environment Development Initiative (SEDI), Dr. Tom Aneni, has called on the Edo State government to place a ban on the use of single-use plastics to check environmental pollution and erosion menace in the state.
He made the call at the Stakeholders Forum on Community Pact Towards a Greener Future – A Zero Waste Approach’ held in Benin.
Aneni noted the ban imposed on single-use plastics by the Lagos State government had helped not only in keeping that state clean but making the drains free from blockades. “We are proposing that they ban single-use plastics because we have a throw-away culture which is a problem. That is one propositions that we have made today in this meeting to the Ministry of Environment”, Dr. Aneni.
Speaking also, chairman, Accredited Waste Manager, Edo State, Mr. Odolevbo Haruna, said for a cleaner state to be guaranteed, the message of cleanliness most be taken to the schools where Sanitary Club, just like the Press Club would be established to catch the children young.
The Head of Department, Environment, Egor Local Government Area, Sanitarian Evelyn Idiagbonya called on the government to reintroduce monthly environmental sanitation, stressing that it would help in keeping the state clean.
