Co‑Founder of the Hamilton and Thelma Ezeonu Foundation, Dr. Thelma Ezeonu, has counseled Anambra school pupils to ignore deceptions emanating from social media and urged them to take their studies seriously saying education remains the bedrock of progress in society.
Ezeonu spoke at Chukwuka Primary School, Agulu community, Anambra State yesterday during the distribution of free school bags to pupils in15 public primary schools in the Anaocha Local Government Area.
“We came today to distribute free school bags to the pupils,” she said, urging the children to take their studies seriously.
Dr. Ezeonu decried the proliferation of online commentaries that portray education as a scam and unattainable dream, a narrative she said angers her deeply.
She lamented bitterly that such misinformation is capable of demoralising young learners, saying such opinion overlooks the transformative power of knowledge and the long‑term benefits of schooling, regardless of career aspirations.

She urged the pupils to focus on their studies and not to be swayed by negative chatter, stressing that education equips individuals with critical thinking, resilience, and the ability to shape their futures.
Education, she stressed, is “very important, irrespective of what you want to become in life – be it a doctor, lawyer, engineer, businessman or a governor.”
Ezeonu reiterated the foundation’s mission: to ensure that no child in Anambra State goes to school with a polythene or nylon bag but with a proper school bag.
She added that the mission is “one child, one school bag” and warned that pupils who fail to use the provided bags after the exercise will be sanctioned.
Speaking later at Echeobi Primary School, Neni, Dr. Ezeonu said the foundation intends to extend the gesture to other local government areas beyond Idemili South, where the programme began.
She appealed to the pupils to put their studies first, noting that the only reward she expects is good academic performance.
