- Makes education compulsory for Omor children
From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha
The traditional ruler of Omor Community in Ayamelum local government area of Anambra State, Igwe Dr Chris Oranu Chidume, has urged federal government to explore the decentralization of the Nigerian police, reform the administrative structure of the country in such a way that states are allowed to manage her resources and each state to have her own police.
Chidume said that the initiative will not only promote state ownership of her resources but also patriotism as well as seek to address prevalent issues in various parts of Nigeria where cartels form pseudo-armies into non-state actors with the sole aim of exploiting natural resources under the guise of stealing from federal government.
The traditional ruler who made the call during this year’s Ofala festival and 6th anniversary on the throne said that granting autonomy and implementing state police will not only secure resources but also foster state development, thereby contributing to the overall progress and prosperity of the nation.
He further commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his free education programme from primary school to Junior secondary school in the state.
Igwe Chidume said that Omor royal cabinet recently passed a resolution that will ensure that the free education project of the state cascaded down to every child in Omor Community, saying that the resolution mandated every child of school age to compulsorily be in school during school hours.
He stated the cabinet wrote to the governor requesting for special intervention on the ongoing teachers’ recruitment in primary and secondary schools in the state to cushion the effect of non-readiness of teachers posted from urban areas to live and work in Omor and Ayamelum local government area, adding that it will guarantee availability of teachers in primary and secondary schools in Omor.
According to him, “that parents and guardians of all children of school age resident in Omor should ensure that children are positioned to take advantage of the state government free education policy.
“That these children are all in school during school hours. That parents are admonished to relieve their children of domestic and non-domestic works that will prevent them from being in school during schools hours. Omor town shall use her instrumentality of law enforcement and order to ensure the implementation of our children being in school hours,” he said.
“Omor, within the year, he thrived in a state of peaceful coexistence and harmony, both inter and intra. My special thanks for to our peace committee that has been mandated to ensure that acrimonious tendency or any form of disagreements arising from our usual farming activities are nipped in the bud. They have worked so diligently that not only we are happy but secured hence this celebration,” Igwe Chidume stated.
