The Anambra State Town’s People Association (ASTPA), the umbrella body for all Anambra town unions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has lauded the Senate for its resolution to immortalize their illustrious son, the late Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The commendation follows the Senate’s recent plenary where lawmakers paid glowing tributes to Anaekwe’s enduring legacy and pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the Association’s President General, Sir Arinze Anadu, praised the Senate’s gesture, describing Anaekwe as a selfless and principled leader who stood firm in defending the legislature’s independence at a critical time for the nation’s democracy.
“Anaekwe’s legacy speaks for itself. If he had not served with integrity, the Senate would not have honoured him this way,” Chief Anadu said. He urged contemporary leaders and citizens alike to emulate the late Speaker’s God-fearing and selfless approach to leadership. “With the fear of God and selflessness, our democracy and unity will thrive and inspire generations,” he added.

It will be recalled that Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anaekwe’s Anambra Central Senatorial District, sponsored the motion, which was co-sponsored by Senators Osita Izunaso, Orji Uzor Kalu, Mohammed Monguno, and others.
In passing the motion, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in Anaekwe’s honour, mandated a delegation to visit his bereaved family, and resolved to collaborate with the House of Representatives and the Anaekwe family to ensure a befitting state burial. The Senate also urged the Federal Government to name a national institution or public edifice after the late Speaker as a lasting tribute to his service to the nation.
