Anambra State Government has shutdown Norbert Hospital, Amansea in Awka North Local Government Area of the state over alleged sharp practices.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, sealed the hospital when he led a team from the Ministry of Health to the place.
He said that he carried out investigations into some alleged illegal activities by the hospital staff and discovered that a lot of things had gone wrong. He said that the ‘doctor’ in charge of the hospital is currently on the run and that he had been declared wanted by the state government.
Obidike, while addressing journalists shortly after sealing off the hospital, expressed anger over the activities of the “quacks” saying that the government was all out to sanitise the health sector in the state. He said that the health ministry would continue to fight against quackery in the state’s health system.
The health commissioner, who vowed to deal with any unprofessional healthcare practitioner operating in the state, explained that prior investigations carried out by the ministry showed that some persons had lost their lives at the said hospital, hence, the government’s action.
Obidike, who revealed that the hospital was not registered with the government, said that the government would make sure that the said quack doctor and others working with him were apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.
The commissioner said that he had the mandate of the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to sanitise the state health sector, adding that the ministry was working hard to reposition public hospitals in the state so as to gain their confidence.
He disclosed that the government was planning to institute Anambra State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency which he said would be responsible for the monitoring of activities of healthcare personnel and hospitals; and as well, get feedback from the masses on health services in their localities.
