Wife of the Anambra Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has said that education is a fundamental right that should never be denied to any individual, calling for collective commitment to making it a top priority in society.
This is contained in a statement by Mrs. Soludo to mark the 2026 International Day of Education on Sunday in Awka.
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed Jan. 24 as the International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education in peace and development.
The commemoration has the theme, “The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education.”
The wife of the governor said that achieving inclusive, equitable and quality education should not be seen as the responsibility of the government alone.
According to her, every segment of society has a role to play in driving meaningful change.
“Any society that aspires to sustainable growth must lay a solid foundation rooted in education, as it shapes both the present and the future.
“In Anambra State, education is viewed beyond the confines of the classroom. The state government clearly understands that the quality of education we provide today directly reflects the kind of future we desire for our state.”
Soludo noted that the government introduced 15 new entrepreneurial subjects into the Junior Secondary School curriculum to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance and future employment.
She said that the new subjects were designed to align learning with current labour market demands and represent a deliberate effort to prepare children for the future.
“The subjects include solar installation, garment making, GSM repairs, agriculture and agro-processing, plumbing, tiling, POP installation and event management.
“Others are bakery, hairstyling and make-up, interior design, CCTV and intercom installation, digital literacy, information technology and robotics.
“The objective is to ensure that every child in the state acquires relevant skills that will enable them to become solution providers and succeed in various fields.”
Soludo described skills acquisition as a key driver of human capital development in a fast-changing global environment.
She noted that the commemoration of the International Day of Education should go beyond celebrating past achievements and serve as a moment for renewed commitment.
Soludo emphasised the need to build an education system that places learning as a first priority and nurtures it as a dream attainable by every child in the state.
