Tobi Amusan didn’t lose her Commonwealth Games title to Devynne Charlton or Megan Simmonds on Thursday night in Glasgow — she lost it to a knee she’d been nursing since a fall in training camp weeks earlier.
By her own account, the world record holder carried a knee injury from that fall into the 100m hurdles final, and it left her unsure of her own fitness heading into the race. It showed. Despite topping her semi-final, the 29-year-old never found her top gear in the final, crossing in 12.60 seconds — her slowest podium finish at the Games since 2018. Cameras caught the moment it turned: clean out of the blocks, but an uncharacteristic grimace crossed her face right after the opening hurdles, and Charlton and Simmonds pulled clear.
Describing what happened, Amusan said she’d taken a hard fall at training camp and had been worried about her knee coming into the meet. She also pointed to the cold conditions in Glasgow as compounding the physical setback.

It was reported the injury was sustained during Team Nigeria’s pre-Games camp in Aberdeen.
Even so, bronze extended her Commonwealth podium streak, and she wasn’t dwelling on what might have been. She said her focus now is simply getting treatment before deciding on next steps. It also denied her a shot at history — a bid to become the first woman to win three straight Commonwealth titles in the event, having won gold in 2018 and 2022.
