Indigenes of Alor in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have raised alarm over a disputed New Yam Festival allegedly being organized by Collins Ebele Chukwumesili, who they claim is falsely presenting himself as the community’s traditional ruler. The concerned residents have called on the Anambra State Government to arrest and prosecute Chukwumesili for impersonation and for causing unrest in the ancient kingdom.

In discussions with journalists, the indigenes emphasized that Alor has a longstanding tradition where traditional rulers are formally recognized by the state government, as outlined in sections 7 and 8 of the Traditional Rulers Law Revised Laws of Anambra State 1991.

According to them, the rightful Igwe of Alor is His Royal Majesty, Igwe Chinedu Elibe Okonkwo, Ezediohamma III, who was elected by the people and recognized by the Anambra State Government.

The community members further allege that Chukwumesili is attempting to undermine Igwe Okonkwo by scheduling a New Yam Festival for August 3, 2024, the same date chosen by the legitimate Igwe.

Under sections 21 and 22 of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ law, only the recognized monarch has the authority to determine the date for such cultural events, making Chukwumesili’s actions a direct challenge to the lawful order.

Additionally, the community accuses Chukwumesili of planning to hire unknown gunmen to disrupt the peace of the community during the festival. gwe Chinedu Elibe Okonkwo has responded to these developments by filing a petition dated July 26, 2024, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and other relevant stakeholders, urging them to intervene to prevent any potential violence and maintain law and order in the state.

Efforts to reach Collins Ebele Chukwumesili for his comments were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone number went unanswered. The community awaits the state government’s intervention to resolve the escalating tension.
