The Ministry of Works has dismissed as false a report alleging that the former Ministry of Works and Housing mismanaged N4.64 billion.
In a statement, Orji Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the publication as a deliberate misrepresentation of the Auditor-General of the Federation’s report. The report purportedly investigated the financial management of the then Federal Ministry of Works and Housing for the 2020-2021 financial years, accusing the housing sector of unauthorized expenditure amounting to N4.64 billion.
Orji strongly refuted the claims, asserting that the report was an attempt to malign the current Minister of Works.
“This report is false and clearly intended to distract and blackmail the Minister of Works, David Umahi. He cannot be blackmailed by the antics of those who wish to maintain the old order in the works sector,” Orji said.
The adviser emphasised that Umahi remains resolute in his mission to reform the works sector.
“He is focused and battle-ready to confront the entrenched inhibitors of progress in the works sector. These desperate detractors are well-known, but they should understand there is no going back on the Minister’s determination to overhaul the works sector. He is committed to liberating it from the whims and caprices of cartels that have, for years, stifled progress and prevented the delivery of cost-effective and enduring road infrastructure,” Orji stated.
He added: “We are surprised that these detractors could stoop so low as to use the image and name of the serving Minister of Works, David Umahi, in their publication. This was clearly done to mislead unsuspecting readers into believing the allegations were linked to the current administration,”* he added.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability while assuring Nigerians that efforts to provide durable infrastructure remain on track despite attempts to undermine its progress.
