Akor Adams scored Nigeria’s only goal, but the Super Eagles fell to a 2-1 defeat against Portugal on Wednesday night as the European side completed its final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought victory in Leiria.

The friendly encounter offered Nigeria another opportunity to test itself against elite opposition, and the Super Eagles responded with determination despite ultimately coming up short against a Portuguese side led by veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto finished neatly past Maduka Okoye after a period of sustained pressure from the hosts. The goal reflected Portugal’s early dominance as Roberto Martínez’s men controlled possession and created the better chances.

Nigeria, however, refused to be overwhelmed and gradually grew into the contest. Their persistence paid off in the 37th minute when Adams found the equaliser, finishing confidently to bring the Super Eagles level and cap an encouraging spell before halftime.

The teams went into the break tied at 1-1, with Nigeria showing resilience and attacking intent against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

Portugal made several changes after the restart as Martínez rotated his squad ahead of the World Cup. Ronaldo remained on the pitch until the 67th minute before leaving to a standing ovation from the home crowd.

The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute when substitute Francisco Conceição restored Portugal’s lead with a clinical finish. The goal proved enough to separate the two sides despite Nigeria’s efforts to force another equaliser in the closing stages.

Although the result ended Nigeria’s unbeaten run, the Super Eagles delivered a competitive performance and created encouraging moments against a team preparing for football’s biggest tournament.

Portugal will now shift its attention to the World Cup, where it opens its Group K campaign against DR Congo before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan. Nigeria, meanwhile, will continue its rebuilding process under coach Eric Chelle as preparations begin for future international competitions and qualification campaigns.
