The Chioma Ajunwa Foundation, in partnership with the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Community in Nigeria, has concluded arrangements for the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking scheduled to hold at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, June 26.

Convener of the programme, retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and Olympic gold medallist, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, disclosed in Lagos that this year’s event promises to be one of the most impactful editions yet, leveraging sports and advocacy to promote a drug-free society.

According to the organisers, several high-profile dignitaries are expected at the event. The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, while the Deputy Consul General of the German Embassy in Lagos is expected as Guest of Honour, underscoring growing international support for anti-drug advocacy and youth development initiatives in Nigeria.

Also expected at the event is Senator Ned Nwoko, who will serve as Vice Chairman of the occasion, alongside the Executive Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, adding a strong grassroots governance presence to the campaign.

Traditional institutions will also be represented, with Eze Christian Okechukwu, Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, serving as the Royal Father of the Day. Assistant Inspector General of Police Omolara, Commandant of the Police College, Ikeja, will serve as the Royal Mother of the Day.

Religious leaders, security agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, sports stakeholders and other notable personalities are also expected to attend. Among them is Bishop Chris Akano of Revival City Church, Ikeja.

Ajunwa-Opara noted that this year’s campaign is unique because of its broad-based approach, bringing together stakeholders from different sectors of society in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

As part of activities marking the event, Chioma Ajunwa’s Veteran Female Football Team will take on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) WADA Male Team in a novelty football match on Thursday, June 25, at the Police College Field, GRA, Ikeja. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m.

The organisers believe the sporting event will further reinforce the campaign’s message on healthy living, youth empowerment and the dangers of drug abuse.
