Former Senate President and Senator representing Yobe North Ahmad Lawan has denied rumours of his alleged defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a statement issued on Sunday by his media adviser, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, Lawan dismissed the reports as “false, baseless, and without merit.” He reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, describing himself as a committed stakeholder in the party since its formation.
“For the record, throughout his illustrious political career spanning 25 years in the National Assembly, Senator Ahmad Lawan has never defected from his party,” the statement read. It recalled that Lawan was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1999 under the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). The ANPP, in turn, merged with other parties in 2013 to form the APC.
Lawan also expressed his continued support for Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, commending his governance efforts. Additionally, he reiterated his backing for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging to work towards the party’s goals for national development.
He urged the public and APC supporters to disregard the rumours, calling them the work of “mischief-makers” attempting to stir political distractions.
Lawan assured that he remains focused on his legislative duties and committed to supporting the APC-led government in delivering good governance to Nigerians.
