The well-tailored agbada, a garment for men has been a sartorial, cultural trademark of the Yoruba people of West Africa, but predominantly located in Nigeria.
The iconic garment is a strong symbol of tradition, prestige, and social status that bestows honour on and accords respect to the man.
As renowned fashion designer and creative director of Omok Essential Clothing, Omokunmi Azeez, explains, the wide-sleeved, flowing robe is traditionally worn by men who embody elegance, confidence, and composure. Historically, agbada is usually crafted from hand-woven fabrics such as Aso-Oke and Guinea brocade. These materials are often decorated with detailed embroidery and elaborate patterns that reflect the wearer’s social standing and wealth.

Agbada is reserved for important occasions such as weddings, religious ceremonies, and festivals.
“Wearing agbada is a powerful statement of cultural identity and pride,” Azeez says, adding: “Among the Yoruba people, it is often paired with fila (cap) and worn during traditional ceremonies, symbolizing a man’s maturity and his place within the community.”
The intricate embroidery and choice of fabric carry symbolic meanings. Different patterns and colours can represent various aspects of life, including spirituality, prosperity, and strength.
