Agbabiaka faces Samuel in CBN Tennis final

The stage is set for a thrilling finale at the Ikoyi Club 1938 after the conclusion of preliminary matches at the National Stadium tennis courts in Surulere, Lagos, on Friday.

Top contenders emerged from a series of keenly contested semi-final clashes, with Damilola Agbabiaka of Cross River headlining the list of finalists. Agbabiaka edged past Wisdom Effiong 9-8 in a tightly fought encounter, narrowly escaping an upset to secure his place in Saturday’s final. He will be joined by Heman Afaramai, who delivered a commanding performance to defeat Joel Michael 9-4.

In the girls’ 16 category, Gloria Samuel booked her spot in the final with a convincing 9-2 victory over Barakat Ganiyu. She will face Favour James, who overcame Omoyinka Ayinla 9-4 in the second semi-final.

Other finalists include Godwin Afaramai in the boys’ 14 category, following his 9-6 win over Divine Ezaka, while Alaba Adesinka advanced with a 9-5 triumph against Abdulkarim Mohammed. Gideon Peter also impressed, recording a dominant 9-0 victory over Best Babalola to secure his place in the final.

Speaking after his semi-final win, Agbabiaka acknowledged the challenge of the contest, noting that such close matches are part of the game. He expressed confidence ahead of the final, stating his focus is firmly on Saturday’s showdown.

Championship coordinator, Godwin Kienka, commended the young players for raising the standard of competition at this year’s tournament. He singled out Agbabiaka for his outstanding performance, noting that the Cross River player has displayed a level of skill surpassing that seen in the 2025 edition.

Kienka also praised players such as Heman Afaramai and Pinky Onyemenam for their consistency and strong performances throughout the week-long championship.

The tournament will conclude on Saturday, March 28, at the Ikoyi Club 1938, where champions across categories will be crowned.
