Gunmen have killed two vigilantes in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State.
The incident which occured in Iboko community in the local government, caused panic in the area.
In November last year, three vigilante members were killed by gunmen in the community.
In the latest incident which occured on Tuesday, the gunmen stormed the area and killed no fewer than two more vigilante members.
A resident of the area, who did not want his name in print, said the gunmen disguised as natives of the area, stopped at strategic locations in the community and bought food items before unleashing their mayhem.
According to him, about 500 Ebonyi women in the area comprising traders and school pupils scampered for safety during the attack and abandoned their wales.
“The unknown gunmen first stopped at a popular filling station at Iboko and filled their vehicles with PMS before gunning down two persons there.
“They moved to where Ebubeagu operatives (now called Neighbourhood Vigilante members) were, and opened fire on them, killing one Fredrick Idike and another person.They equally used an axe to slice two of the vigilante members, who had been deposited at the mortuary.
“Yesterday was Iboko Market and the ugly incident made the traders to start running for safety.
“The whole market was deserted yesterday, because of the ugly incident”, the resident stated.
When contacted, the state Acting Police Public Relations Officer , DSP Ukandu Joshua,said ,”yes, the incident happened on Tuesday. Two lives were lost. We are still investigating it”
