The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, UNIBEN branch, yesterday, directed its members to embark on indefinite strike over the underpayment of September 2026 Emolument by the Federal Government.

The directive was the resolution reached at the Union’s Congress held yesterday.

“Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Benin, Branch are hereby apprised of the resolutions of Congress at its meeting of Monday, 5th October, 2026 on the underpayment of September 2026 emolument by the Federal Government.

“Congress resolved and invoked the extant NEC resolution that granted Branches authority to withdraw their services when salaries are not fully paid by the 3rd of the new month, and the resolution of the Emergency NEC of 5th September, 2026 mandating Branches in Federal universities whose emolument was underpaid to take action, and consequently declared a total and indefinite withdrawal of services until the underpaid emolument is fully paid.

“Consequently, members are directed to cease undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision, and seminars; cease attendance at Departmental Board, Faculty Board, Senate, or other statutory meetings; and cease engagement in any academic or administrative activity, such as the submission, compilation, and uploading of examination results, while this action lasts.

“Where any extenuating circumstances arise that may require a review of this decision, the Branch Chairman shall convene an emergency meeting of Congress to formally take a resolution on it. Until such a Congress meeting is convened, this decision shall continue to subsist.

“As we had also previously stated, most federal universities, including Bayero University, Kano, University of Ilorin, Federal of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, University of Port Harcourt, Federal University, Otuoke, Federal University, Kebbi, University of Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Federal University of Technology, Akure, and University of Ibadan have paid the September 2026 emolument (inclusive of all the components- CATA, PA, EAA) in full and we expect the Administration of the University of Benin to do the same”, the Union said.

The Congress resolution was signed by Dr. Enaruna Edosa and Lucky Aimiyekagbon, Chairman and Secretary of ASUU-UNIBEN Branch.

The Union had earlier embarked on strike over underpayment of its members August emoluments.
