Super Eagles forward and Napoli of Italy goal-king, Victor Osimhen couldn’t hide his emotions after he broke the record of African top scorer in the Serie A history, which was held by former AC Milan striker now President of Liberia, George Weah.
Osimhen set the new record after he scored his 47th goal in the Serie A via a penalty, in Sunday’s lone goal win against Fiorentina at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, as Napoli celebrated its third Scudetto after 33 years.
“While growing up, I’ve always admired the great achievements of so many African legends and His Excellency Mr. George Weah, President of Liberia is one of them, an icon in the world of football and also a leader to his people,” Osimhen said.
“Someone who has motivated and inspired millions of young talents alike. On Sunday, it was a great honor breaking his record as the new top scoring African player in Serie A history, an achievement I will forever cherish.
“Mr. George Weah has set a foundation of excellence for individuals like me to emulate and his legacy will forever be remembered.
“I celebrate this milestone with everyone who has inspired and supported me in this journey. Thank you for your contributions, God is the greatest.”
Former African Player of the Year and Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba has congratulated Osimhen on his new feat.
The Ivorian said on Monday: “Victor Osimhen, from the streets of Nigeria to the history books. Congratulations brother, to you and your club.”
Osimhen is certainly one of Napoli’s driving forces in this formidable season, but also much more. He’s not just the top scorer for the club, but the hero of an entire city. He made the kids in Naples fall in love with his mask, as everyone wore it.
With the Scudetto in the bag, Osimhen did party with his teammates, as did his fellow Africans in the teammates; Tanguy Ndombele and Frank Zambo Anguissa whom he has a special bond with.
The Cameroonian and former Fulham midfielder shared a picture of the trio with a post that read.
“We did it, with my men.”
