Senator Uche Ekwunife has paid glowing tribute to officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, ex-servicemen and women, and the families of fallen heroes as the nation marked the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD).
In a statement made available to the SUN on Friday commemorating the solemn occasion, Ekwunife who represented Anambra Central in the 9th Senate described the Armed Forces as the bedrock of Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, noting that their courage, patriotism, and selfless service have remained indispensable to the country’s peace and survival.
“Today, I pay glowing tribute to the officers and men of our Armed Forces whose courage, patriotism, and selflessness laid the foundation for Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty, peace, and stability,” she said, adding that the sacrifices of fallen heroes are permanently etched in the nation’s conscience and must never be forgotten.
The 2025 Anambra Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC extended heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families of military personnel who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country, stressing that their loss represents a collective national debt that must be honoured beyond ceremonial words.
Ekwunife also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in his capacity as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for what she described as sustained efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve the morale and operational capacity of troops deployed across various theatres.
“I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued commitment to boosting the morale and capacity of our troops at the frontlines,” she stated.

Acknowledging the complex security challenges confronting the nation, including insurgency and banditry, Ekwunife praised serving personnel for their resilience and unwavering dedication, while equally recognising the invaluable contributions of retired military officers who devoted their most productive years to national service.
She used the occasion to renew calls for enhanced welfare for both serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, emphasising the need for improved welfare packages, prompt payment of entitlements, and access to quality healthcare.
“A nation that truly honours its heroes must go beyond words and demonstrate its appreciation through concrete and compassionate actions,” the senator said, describing welfare as a moral obligation rather than a privilege.
Reaffirming that the sacrifices of fallen heroes were not in vain, Ekwunife urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from their courage by working collectively toward a safer, more united, and more prosperous country.
She concluded by expressing unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian Armed Forces and calling on citizens to continually remember, honour, and support the nation’s defenders, whom she described as enduring symbols of courage, sacrifice, and national pride.
