Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L clash at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro.
The Super Eagles went into the match hoping to secure a positive result but were stunned by a determined Guinea-Bissau side, who took control with three unanswered goals.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute after being set up by Renato Nhaga, leaving Nigeria trailing 1-0 at half-time.
The Super Eagles improved their possession after the break but struggled to turn their control into goals.
Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Mama Baldé found the net following an assist from Mamadi Camará.
Nigeria pressed for a response but could not find a way through the home defence.
The hosts then put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time, with Álvaro Djaló scoring in the 95th minute after receiving an assist from Tamble Monteiro.
Despite having 55.3 per cent possession and completing 370 passes compared with Guinea-Bissau’s 303, Nigeria could not translate their greater control into a result.
Both teams recorded 12 shots, but Guinea-Bissau had the better attacking return, registering seven shots on target against Nigeria’s five.
Nigeria also had more touches inside the opposition box, 22 to 13, while producing 24 crosses compared with the hosts’ 10.
The defeat leaves the Super Eagles facing a disappointing result in their Group L campaign, while Guinea-Bissau will take confidence from a comprehensive home victory.
Nigeria will now have to regroup and address their attacking shortcomings after failing to score despite creating periods of pressure during the match.
