Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed deep sympathy with residents and families affected by recent flooding across parts of the state, while issuing a strong warning against building structures or dumping refuse on natural waterways.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday, the governor expressed grave concern over the destruction of homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
He noted that Osun has recorded unusually heavy rainfall in recent weeks, placing immense pressure on drainage channels and rivers statewide.
To mitigate the crisis, Governor Adeleke has directed the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, led by Elder Ayanleye Aina, to visit the affected communities, evaluate environmental factors contributing to the deluge, and draft a comprehensive response plan.
Recalling previous state initiatives, the governor noted that his administration had already executed initial dredging and drainage clearing projects to improve water flow.
He reassured citizens that further targeted interventions would be deployed wherever necessary to safeguard lives and property.
However, Governor Adeleke emphasized that government efforts alone are insufficient without community cooperation.
Stressing that human-induced blockages undermine public safety efforts, Adeleke said, “I urge my people, the residents of Osun State, to stop dumping refuse in waterways and along roadsides, and to desist from building on natural water channels and flood-prone corridors.”
He further called on residents to remain vigilant and report blocked drainages, rising water levels, and other environmental hazards to designated emergency authorities.
The governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to delivering continuous support, protecting vulnerable communities, and preventing future flood disasters across Osun.
