The Adekunle Gold Foundation has conducted its quarterly sickle cell medical outreach in Lagos, delivering essential healthcare services to over 400 individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease.
The outreach, held recently, was organised in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative.
During the programme, beneficiaries received a wide range of critical medical services, including specialist consultations, laboratory diagnostics, blood transfusions for patients with severe anaemia, pain management and crisis care, physiotherapy support, and the distribution of essential medications.
Patients were also provided with prescription drugs and treatment supplies intended to support their care for up to three months.
Sickle cell disease remains one of the most prevalent genetic disorders globally, yet it continues to receive comparatively limited international attention and funding. Nigeria carries the highest burden, with millions affected and thousands of children born with the condition annually.
The foundation, established by singer Adekunle Gold—who has lived with the condition since childhood—has become a strong advocate for increased awareness, improved access to healthcare, and expanded research efforts.
Speaking on the initiative, Gold said, “Living with sickle cell disease is something I understand personally. Beyond the physical pain, it involves ongoing medical care that many people cannot afford. Through the foundation, we are committed to improving access to the care people need to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.”
In a statement, the foundation noted that beyond its outreach programmes, it is focused on expanding sustainable healthcare access. It highlighted the launch of its 5 Star Care initiative in 2025, which provided free health insurance coverage to 1,000 individuals living with sickle cell disease.
The initiative was implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Health Management Agency, enabling beneficiaries to access continuous care within the state’s healthcare system.
Additionally, the foundation is collaborating with researchers at New York University’s Department of Global Health to explore innovative interventions aimed at improving treatment outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for patients.
