ADC zoning push is a plot to sideline the North — Fabiyi

Fabiyi

By Lawrence Agbo

Fabiyi, the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has strongly opposed calls for the party to adopt zoning ahead of future elections, describing the move as a deliberate plot to weaken Northern Nigeria politically.

Speaking on Trust TV News about the growing debate over power rotation within the party, Fabiyi said the ADC has no reason to embrace zoning, insisting that such a system serves only the interests of a few political elites rather than the wider Nigerian population.

According to him, the push for zoning is not driven by fairness or national balance, but by what he called an “elite conspiracy” aimed at denying the North equal political participation.

“I will never support ADC adopting zoning. We have no business dealing with zoning. The call for zoning is purely an elite conspiracy,” he said.

He argued that zoning would unfairly limit the democratic rights of party members by restricting who can contest for leadership positions based on region rather than competence and popular support.

Fabiyi maintained that the ADC should remain a party where every qualified aspirant, regardless of geographical background, has the opportunity to seek elective office without artificial political barriers.

He warned that institutionalising zoning would amount to disenfranchising Northern politicians and voters, creating unnecessary regional divisions within the opposition movement.

The ADC National Secretary stressed that the party’s focus should be on strengthening internal democracy and presenting credible alternatives to Nigerians, rather than engaging in arrangements that could deepen distrust among members.

He added that the North should not be treated as a political bloc to be excluded through negotiated elite agreements, insisting that national leadership must be determined through open competition rather than predetermined zoning formulas.
