The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of being distracted by 2027 re-election politics, while insecurity worsens across the country.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party cited the United States’ decision to permit non-emergency embassy staff to leave Abuja as a sign of declining confidence in Nigeria’s security framework.

The ADC, while mourning Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and other soldiers killed in a terrorist attack in Borno State, said the incident reflected a troubling pattern of systemic failure.

According to the party, attacks across the North-West, North-Central, North-East and the Middle Belt have become increasingly frequent and coordinated, leading to widespread killings, displacement, and destruction of communities.

“For a country like the United States to take such a step, it signals a clear loss of confidence in the administration’s ability to guarantee safety,” the statement said as it described the move as a verdict, not a routine decision.

The ADC alleged that despite mounting security threats, the Federal Government appears preoccupied with political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections.

It maintained that while the bravery of Nigerian troops remains unquestionable, the failure lies in leadership and systemic support.

“The death of a General in active service is not just a tragedy; it signals deeper structural and leadership failures,” the party stated

It stressed that the President, as Commander-in-Chief, bears ultimate responsibility for the nation’s security direction.

The party called for an urgent reset of Nigeria’s security strategy, improved coordination among agencies, and measurable outcomes to restore public confidence.

It urged the President to refocus on protecting lives and ensuring that the sacrifices of security personnel are not in vain.
