Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has backed calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review results of the Adamawa State governorship poll in 16 local governments, before the rerun.
The local governments which the All Progressives Congress (APC) demanded a review are Michika, Madagali, Hong, Gombi, Song, Girei, Numan, Lamurde, Demsa, Guvuk, Mayo Belwa, Jada, Toungo, Shelleng, Ganye and Maiha.
HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, who addressed newsmen, yesterday, in Abuja, also called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali, to arrest some agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who allegedly beat up the resident electoral commissioner.
He said: “The electoral umpire should follow the precedence they already set clearly in the Enugu and Abia governorship elections in which INEC took some hours to review certain contentious results from some local government collation centres of Abia and Enugu before reaching a determination which received widespread positive acceptance and overwhelming rejoicing in Abìa and Enugu states.
“If INEC did the reviews of Enugu and Abia gubernatorial election before announcing the results, what stops the commission from doing this review comprehensively and thoroughly in Adamawa State before conducting the rerun that has been scheduled?”
He further called on INEC to redeem its image with the claim that Nigerians do not believe in its independence and credibility not after assuring voters of its readiness to conduct transparent poll, but ended up not meeting the expectations of the citizens.
