Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has declared Monday, 14 September 2026, a work-free day across the state in honour of the late elder statesman and former governor of the defunct Gongola State, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
The declaration, according to the governor, is to enable the people of Adamawa State to continue to pay their last respects to the late statesman and reflect on his contributions and legacies to the development of the state and Nigeria.
Tukur, who was also a prominent national political figure, was laid to rest in Yola on Sunday, 13 September, following funeral prayers held at the Lamido’s Palace.
In a statement issued earlier by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, Fintiri said the declaration of the work-free day was in recognition of the immense contributions of the late Tukur patriarch to the growth and development of Adamawa State and the country.
The governor had earlier declared a three-day mourning period in honour of the former Gongola State governor following his death.
Fintiri said the state would continue to honour the memory of the deceased throughout the mourning period, directing that all flags across the state remain at half-mast.

He urged residents to use the work-free day to pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased and seek God’s comfort for his family, friends and the people of Adamawa State over the loss.
The governor described the late Tukur as an elder statesman whose life and public service left significant footprints in the political and socio-economic development of Adamawa State and Nigeria.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s contributions to the growth and development of Adamawa State and Nigeria remain significant, and this declaration is a mark of respect for his service and legacy,” the statement said.
The governor further called on the people of the state to continue to uphold peace and unity as they mourn the departed elder statesman.
However, the declaration does not affect essential services, which are expected to remain operational throughout the work-free day.
The late Bamanga Tukur, a prominent political figure from Adamawa State, served as the governor of the former Gongola State and remained active in national politics and public affairs for several decades.
His burial in Yola on Sunday brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, government officials, family members, associates and other dignitaries who gathered to pay their final respects to the former governor and elder statesman.
