The Abia State Government has recruited 500 nurses, who are currently undergoing documentation processes, to boost the healthcare of the people.

The state government said it has also approved the implementation of Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for Local Government health workers in the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, who made the disclosure in Umuahia, said the recruitment was done through a transparent process, adding that with the recruitment, the shortage of nurses in the state’s public health institutions would be addressed squarely.

The commissioner said the approval and implementation of CONHESS has now removed any dichotomy in the healthcare workers in the state.

He said the gesture was long in coming because the government needed to confirm the exact number of health workers in the LGAs before granting approval for the CONHESS.

“If this is anything to boost the morale of workers, Governor Alex Otti has done it.”

The commissioner for Information, Chief Okey Kanu, added that the approval of the CONHESS was part of the ongoing reforms in the state civil service.

“The state government continues to prioritise workers’ welfare and conditions of service of its workforce. This commendable move makes Abia State one of the few states in the country that pays the federal government Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS)”, he informed.
